What to expect on July 21 as Trinamul Congress gears up for Martyrs’ Day programme

Almost all roads in central Calcutta that lead to Esplanade would be closed for vehicular traffic for a large part of Friday (July 21) for the Martyrs’ Day programme of the Trinamul Congress.

Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the state are likely to join the rally, which will be held in front of Victoria House.

A list of things you need to know if you are planning to step out on Friday:

What: Trinamul to observe Martyrs’ Day on July 21

Where: In front of Victoria House, Esplanade

When: The rally starts at 11am

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee likely to arrive at: 12.30 pm

Event likely to end at: 2 pm

Traffic disruption

Rallies to head for the venue from multiple locations from early on Friday

  • From Sealdah station: AJC Bose Road-Moulali-SN Banerjee Road-Dorina crossing-JL Nehru Road-Bentinck Street
  • From Shyambazar five-point crossing: Bhupen Bose Avenue-Bidhan Sarani-College Street-Nirmal Chandra Street-Ganesh Chandra Avenue-Central Avenue
  • From Howrah bridge: Strand Road-Kingsway-Plassey Gate Road-Red Road-Mayo Road-New Road-JL Nehru Road-Bentinck Street
  • From Hazra crossing: SP Mukherjee Road-Ashutosh Mukherjee Road-JL Nehru Road
  • From Girish Park: Central Avenue
  • From Khudiram Anushilan Kendra: Auckland Road-Strand Road-Kingsway Plassey Gate Road-Kutchha Pathway through Taltala Ground-Red Road-Mayo Road-Dorina crossing-JL Nehru Road
  • From Geetanjali Stadium: Rashbehari connector-Hazra crossing

Transport availability

  • Buses will be few and far between since the majority of the private operators will stay off the roads.
  • Cab operators said a small number will operate but from the evening.
  • Cab aggregators promised to work, but riders may have to pay through their nose because of the demand-supply mismatch.
  • Autorickshaws are likely to be off the roads from late morning, union leaders said.
  • Metro Railway is slated to run its usual weekday quota of 288 trains. The first and last trains will leave the terminal stations of Dum Dum and Kavi Subhas (New Garia) at 6.50 am and 9.40 pm. The first and last trains will leave Dakshineswar at 7 am and 9.28m.

Weather

The Met office has ruled out heavy rain on Friday. But the reasonably high moisture content in the air can cause one or two brief spells of thundershowers.
