“The sergeant had prosecuted a motorcyclist for not wearing helmet minutes before four men came and started abusing the officer for prosecuting the man,” said a senior officer of the traffic department.

The penalty for riding a two-wheeler without headgear is Rs 1,000. Earlier, the fine was Rs 100 but since the increase this year, the police have been facing resistance, several officers said.

Dhak, the senior officer said, has complained that he was verbally abused and pushed. He lost his balance and fell, the officer said. Dhak complained that he suffered injuries on his chest and waist. He was given first-aid at Baghajatin State General Hospital.

Dhak lodged a complaint with Survey Park police station on Friday. The four who allegedly assaulted him were arrested. Cops identified them as Balai Das, Panu Kundu, Aditya Saha and Palash Halder.
