The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) decided to introduce the improvement exams from 2023 to give a chance to candidates “to improve their performance in any one subject of their choice”.

Almost every school in the city has students wanting to write papers again.

Between June 19 and 23, principals of schools registered the names of students who want to appear in the improvement exams.

In St James’ School, nine students have applied for ISC improvement exams.

In Pratt Memorial School, six students in ISC have applied.

In La Martiniere for Boys, 10 candidates in ISC and six in ICSE have applied for improvement exams.

In Don Bosco Park Circus, about eight students have applied for ISC improvement exams.

In the Heritage School, 10 students in ISC and 12 in ICSE want to write the exams again.

In Loreto House, one ICSE student and two ISC students have applied.

In Delhi Public School New Town, two students in ICSE and five in ISC have applied.

At St Augustine’s Day School Shyamnagar, four students in ISC and two in ICSE will write the exams.

In MP Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School, eight students in ISC have applied for improvement.

In National Gems Higher Secondary School, three ISC students have applied.

“The improvement also has been mentioned in the NEP (National Education Policy)... If a child has not done well in the main exam, they can always go for an improvement test,” Gerry Arathoon, CISCE chief executive and secretary, told Metro last week.

The results of the improvement exams will be declared in August.

“The higher of the two marks obtained by the candidates in the two examinations (i.e the main examination vs the improvement examination) will be considered as the final marks,” the circular said.

If a candidate is absent for the improvement test, the marks obtained in the main exam will be unchanged, it said.

The improvement exams for both ICSE and ISC will be conducted in the exam conveneR’s school.

“For invigilation, we would have to contact a school in our zone whose students are not appearing for the exam,” said Seema Sapru, principal, The Heritage School and ISC convener of one of the zones.

“If students are not satisfied with their marks they now have a chance to improve them. They have nothing to lose,” said Rodney Borneo, principal of St Augustine’s Day School Shyamnagar.
