A cricket field conforming to the guidelines of the Cricket Association of Bengal and the Board of Control for Cricket in India will come up in New Town’s Action Area III.
Hidco, which builds infrastructure in New Town, has selected a plot where the cricket field will come up. It will later be converted into a stadium.
New Town has a cricket stadium near City Centre II.
The new one is coming up behind DLF New Town Heights, opposite Sukhobrishti Housing Complex.
According to a Hidco official, the field will have three cricket pitches — each 25-metre long and 3.05-metre wide.
“The new field will conform to the guidelines of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Cricket Association of Bengal. We arepreparing the field in a way that Ranji Trophy matches and other domestic matches can be played there,” theofficial said.
Ranji venues in and around the city include the Eden Gardens, a ground on the Salt Lake campus of Jadavpur University and the Bengal Cricket Academy’s field in Kalyani.
Of the three pitches that will be built on the new ground, one will serve as the main pitch. The other two will be used for practice.
“The stadium will have stands and changing rooms for players. Floodlights will be installed on the ground,” the official said.
A senior CAB official said they are in touch with Hidco officials regarding the design of the field and the facilities for the players.
“We are extending all cooperation, including technical assistance, to Hidco in building the stadium. It is good that such a field is coming up in the city as it will attract more youngsters to the sport,” he said.
Tapas Chatterjee, the MLA of New Town-Rajarhat, said the field would provide more opportunities to budding cricketers in the area.
