Taste the flavours of Karachi with ‘Khatakat’ at Sanjha Chulha

Khata-kat-khata-kat… The offal is minced and fried on a tawa, creating a signature sound that gives its name to a popular dish from Pakistan. Can you guess what it is? It’s Khatakat, of course! This unique dish, which instantly reminds us of a galloping horse, is now being served at Sanjha Chulha in Kolkata this Ramzan.

What is Khatakat? 

Interestingly, the dish derives its name from the distinctive sound produced while it’s prepared on the tawa. It includes lamb organ meats, like kidney, liver, heart, testicles, brain and lungs, along with minced meat — all fried with spices and served with parathas. With a rich, earthy flavour, Khatakat is a unique culinary experience. Khatakat is especially popular in Pakistan, available in almost every food joint. The dish is believed to have originated in Karachi. While the use of spices can vary, it is typically made with onions, ginger, garlic, chilies, and a blend of other spices such as cumin and coriander. Asif Ahmed, co-owner of Sanjha Chulha, said, “We prepare this dish with both chicken and mutton, but we use only gurda (kidney) and kaleji (liver) with the keema. We are doing it for the first time and I think we are the first to introduce it to Kolkata.”

Khatakat, also known as ‘Kata Kat’, is a popular street food in Hyderabad. Many call it a non-veg Pav Bhaji, where instead of the ‘pav’ it’s served with a ‘paratha’.

Try Khatakat at Sanjha Chulha 

You can try Khatakat at Sanjha Chulha's Park Circus outlet this Ramzan month. While the chicken Khatakat is priced at Rs 100, the mutton version is available at Rs 140. You can pair it up with a paratha. “We are serving it in small batches, as it is very new to the palate of the people and customers might want to try it first. People are showing interest, asking why Khatakat. It is something different and no one has done it before here in a restaurant,” said Asif.

Other things to try at Sanjha Chulha during Ramzan are Chicken Haleem, Mutton Haleem, Chicken Chargah, Chicken Sheekh, Chicken 65 etc.
