The Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy joined hands with Allsport Management to organise the 13th edition of the Chess for Youth Tournament between November 3 and 6 at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in Kolkata. A total of 566 players participated in the tournament, including one grandmaster and seven international masters. La Martiniere for Boys was named as “the most encouraging school” in the biggest junior chess competition of its kind, which returned this year after a gap of six years.
Players competed across 13 different categories in the competition
Sutirtha Mukherjee, who recently won a bronze medal in table tennis at the Asian Games, and former footballer and coach Subrata Bhattacharya inaugurated the event on November 3. Thereafter, intense competition ensued across 13 different categories, producing gripping chess over three days.
The pandemic of Covid-19 as well as other logistical complications had prevented the tournament from being organised over the last six years
In the premier category, grandmaster Mitrabha Guha emerged as the champion, claiming a prize of Rs 35,000 to go with a trophy. The remaining winners also received trophies for winning their respective categories — Reyaan Gharai for Boys Under-6, Arpitangshi Bhattacharya for Girls Under-6, Pranay Salarpuria for Boys Under-8, Kashwini Maity for Girls Under-8, Somiddho Rajbanshi for Boys Under-10, Srijita Das for Girls Under-10, Aditya Kayet for Boys Under-12, Sunetra Dey for Girls Under-12, Shankhodip Dey for Boys Under-14, Debapriya Manna for Girls Under-14, Uddipan Roy for Boys Under-16 and Mrittika Mallick for Girls Under-16.
