List of NLUs in India

Courses, Specialisations, Infrastructure & Rankings and Accreditations

India underwent a significant transformation in legal education with the establishment of National Law Universities (NLUs), starting with the National Law School of India University in Bangalore in 1987. This trend continued with the founding of NALSAR in Hyderabad in 1998, heralding a new era in legal academia.

Modelled after prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), NLUs became centres of excellence governed by state statutes, with the Chancellor usually being the Chief Justice or High Court Chief Justice. Exceptions include RMLNLU in Lucknow and Dr B R Ambedkar National Law University in Rai, Haryana, where the Chancellorship is held by the Chief Minister and Governor, respectively.

Currently, India has 25 NLUs, with 24 conducting admissions through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi), stands out by conducting its admission test, the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET).

The emergence of NLUs has revolutionized legal education, introducing standardized and accessible admission processes. This ensures that aspiring legal scholars from all regions of the country have equal opportunities to pursue their dreams.
