Police have arrested Pintulal Mukherjee for his suspect¬ed involvement in the attack. He was produced in a court in Basirhat on Tuesday and re¬manded in police custody for two weeks. At least four men attacked the women in Charghat-Kamarpara area.

"The attackers came from behind and attacked the two women from close range, dragging the duo towards them. However, after the women raised an alarm, the miscreants managed to flee", an eye witness said.

The women were rushed to Charghat primary health centre, from where one of them was transferred to R.G. Kar Medical College Hospital.

Police have began a probe and are examining whether the women had any prior enmity with the assailants.

Meanwhile, resource persons have blamed police for its failure to stop the sale of acid despite repeated incidents of such attacks. "Deadly acid is still easily available in markets", said secretary of the resource persons' union Mizanur Rehaman.
