Trinamul councillor of North Barrackpore Municipality, Champa Das, was shot at by unidentified men near her home at Ichhapur Mayapalli area in Noapara around 9pm on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses claimed masked goons on two bikes fired at least four rounds, of which one bullet hit her left thigh.

She has been admitted to RG Kar Hospital in Calcutta.

Das, who won as an Independent from ward 2, joined Trinamul early this year. Minister Jyotipriyo Mullick blamed the BJP for the attack. BJP MLA Sunil denied the charge and pointed a finger at “infighting within Trinamul”. Police said probe was on.

“The BJP had threatened her with dire consequences unless she joined the BJP and they tried to kill her since she refused to oblige them,” Mullick told The Telegraph.

BJP leadership has, however, sought to refute the allegation.

“The area where the councillor was attacked is a den of criminals close to Trinamul and divided into two rival camps of the party. This is known to all. The attack on the councillor is a fallout of that rivalry,” BJP MLA Sunil said.
