A Trinamul councillor of the Jalpaiguri municipality was arrested on Wednesday in connection with last month’s suicide of a well-connected elderly couple, Subodh and Aparna Bhattacharya, in the town.

Sandip Ghosh, who is the councillor of ward 14, has been accused of abetting the couple’s suicide by poison.

Saikat Chatterjee, the vice-chairperson of the local civic body, another accused in the case, has filed a petition in Calcutta High Court, seeking anticipatory bail.

The police are in search of Monomoy Sarkar and Sonali Biswas, two others accused of maligning the couple’s image.

On April 1, Aparna Bhattacharya, 55, and her husband Subodh Bhattacharya, 67, were found in a critical state at their residence in the Pandapara-Joy Lane area of ward 12. Rushed to the super-speciality hospital, Subodh was pronounced dead. After a while, Aparna, a former vice-chairperson of the civic body here, also died.

The police, during their probe, recovered a suicide note where the couple accused these four of abetment. Sikha Chatterjee, the BJP MLA of Dabgram-Fulbari, who is Subodh’s sister, filed a complaint with Kotwali police, accusing the quartet, and moved Calcutta High Court for a CBI probe.

Allegedly, these four persons were falsely charging the couple of taking cash from people in exchange for jobs. Trinamul has distanced itself from Sandip’s arrest.
