This incident comes a day after a Plus Two student died and another was injured when a part of the wall of a toilet at a government-run school collapsed on them in Malda.

In Purulia’s Adra, Manindra’s family members said he studied at the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) centre on the campus of Shyamsundarpur primary school.

“Manindra was playing hide-and-seek when the wall collapsed on him. We rushed him to hospital but to no avail,” said Pradip Chitrakar, the boy’s uncle. Residents, whose children study at the ICDS centre, claimed the newly built wall would shake as it was not built on a proper base.

“We drew the attention of the ICDS and primary school authorities to this issue of the unsteady wall and asked authorities to not allow children to venture close to the structure. Nothing was done,” alleged an angry villager.

As the news spread, scores of residents started demonstrating outside the school campus. Acting headmaster of the primary school, Amit Kumar Roy, said: “It’s an unfortunate incident. The boy was not a student of our school but he used to study at the ICDS centre which runs within our campus.”

School education department authorities of Raghunathpur sub-division inspected the spot but refused to comment.
