A group of villagers attacked a police team in North Dinajpur on Friday following the unnatural death of a minor girl.

They also resorted to protests by burning wood at a market and alleged that the girl had been raped and murdered. The police used batons and burst teargas shells to restore normality in the area.

Sources said a 17-year-old girl had gone missing from her village on Thursday evening.

“We had initially thought she had gone to a relative’s place but as she didn’t return even after 8.30pm, we started a search for her,” said her uncle.

On Friday morning, some local people spotted her body in a jute field. “We suspect that she has been raped and murdered. We want exemplary punishment for all those who were involved in the incident,” the uncle added.

The police had to use force to seize the body which was sent to Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
