Tollywood director and Trinamul’s Barrackpore MLA Raj Chakraborty was allegedly attacked by a group of youths a little after he inaugurated a park at Baro Masjid in Titagarh on Tuesday evening.

Raj’s security personnel, however, acted in time and managed to rescue him, thwarting the attack in which one of the guards was injured.

It was the second attack on the MLA after August last year when he was heckled and assaulted in Barrackpore town.

Police and witnesses said the incident occurred when Raj was approaching to attend another programme accompanied by former Barrackpore civic chief Uttam Das.

A group of youth came close to the MLA and handed over a written representation, when some others allegedly tried to push him away.

“It was a planned attack by the goons who did not like the beautification of the park since they had made it their den. I was taken aback by the sudden attack and managed to take shelter in a room with the support of security personnel, while others thwarted them,” Chakraborty said, adding that stern action would be taken against the attackers.

Barrackpore police commissioner Manoj Verma rushed to the spot and spoke to the MLA. “We have begun a probe. However, it could not be ascertained what actually led to the attack,” Verma added.

Titagarh police sources said six local Trinamul activists were detained after scanning the video of the incident and they were taken to the police station for interrogation.

Trinamul insiders claimed that the incident was a fallout of internal bickering in the party.

“After his election, Chakraborty had inducted into the party a few close aides to slain BJP leader Manish Shukla. This angered the associates of an influential section of the ruling party who basically dominated the area. Today, goons associated with this section attacked the MLA,” a Trinamul insider said.

A BJP leader in Barrackpore said: “Though half a dozen goons attacked the local MLA, no leader tried to prevent them. It appears that the goons enjoyed the support of Trinamul leaders.”
