Mamata Banerjee has convened a meeting with chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of Trinamul Congress-run civic bodies on Thursday to finalise the party’s strategy for the coming civic polls.

A senior Trinamul leader said the meeting would be held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town, near Calcutta.

“Everybody concerned has been told not to miss the meeting. A special stress has been laid on civic bodies of north Bengal and western districts, where the BJP made unprecedented gains in the Lok Sabha polls last year,” said the leader.

Polls are likely to be held to 100 civic bodies, including the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, this summer.

The chief minister will meet senior councillors at the civic bodies in Siliguri, Taherpur and Joynagar — the only ones in the state not ruled by Trinamul now — and district leaders concerned.

Sources in Trinamul said Mamata would issue important instructions on the way forward in preparing the party’s campaign. According to him, the Trinamul chief would seek to eliminate all doubts regarding selection of candidates at the meeting, making it clear that the process would all be done from 30B Harish Chatterjee Street in Calcutta.

“She will also issue instructions for completion of development activities on a war-footing,” the Trinamul leader said.
