Homemaker, beaten up by in-laws on Monday, dies at Malda Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday

Family members have alleged that in-laws were pressuring her to get Rs 50,000 from her parents as dowry

A 34-year-old homemaker, who had been beaten up allegedly by her in-laws on Monday, died at Malda Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.

Her family members have alleged that the in-laws were pressuring her to get Rs 50,000 from her parents as dowry.

Sources said Sabina Yeasmin, the victim, had married Nasimul Momin, a resident of Enayetpur village of Manikchak block, around 10 years back. Momin works in Delhi as a labourer. The couple have two minor children.

Nursherda Bibi, Sabina’s sister, has filed a complaint with the police, alleging that for the past few months, they were asking the victim to get the money from her family. On Monday, Momin’s parents and two sisters beat her with iron rods and sticks. As her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to MMCH where she died today.

The accused, police sources said, have fled the village. Searches are on to nab them.

Woman drowns

Kuili Oraon, 52, who is from the Bhagatpur tea estate of Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district, drowned in a stream on Tuesday evening.

Sources said she had been to Luksan tea estate to bring her sister to her home. While the duo were crossing the Ghatia stream while returning, Kuili drowned. Her sister informed locals but they couldn’t trace her. On Wednesday, police found her body downstream.
