Five firearms, ammunition found buried in village

Over the past few weeks, instances of violence sparked in Islampur police district of North Dinajpur as part of political clashes or organised attacks by criminals

Police in North Dinajpur seized five firearms and some more ammunition from a village in Goalpokhar on Monday night.

Over the past few weeks, instances of violence sparked in Islampur police district of North Dinajpur as part of political clashes or organised attacks by criminals, leading to deaths and injuries and prompting residents and political parties to seek stern police action.

In response, police raided various sites, including Fakirdhara, a village under Goalpokhar police station.

“We acted on a tip-off and raided an under-construction house. Five firearms — three 9mm pistols, one 7mm pistol and a country-made firearm — as well as nine rounds of live cartridges and six magazines, which were all buried in the ground, were recovered. Our officers are probing who stored these and why,” said Bishop Sarkar, the superintendent of police of Islampur police district.

Clash

At least six persons got injured as alleged Trinamul and BJP supporters clashed in Malda on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, a delegation of BJP supporters was on its way to the office of the divisional railway manager of Eastern Railway’s Malda division. BJP alleged that some Trinamul supporters attacked them at Jhaljhalia, injuring saffron party leaders Ashim Sarkar and Sutapa Mukherjee. Trinamul’s Gautam Das alleged that the BJP assembled goons to create tension who attacked Trinamul supporters and injured four.
