The Bengal education department has suspended the headmaster and assistant headmaster of Daribhit High School in connection with the violence that led to the death of two former students on September 20.

Education minister Partha Chatterjee said in Calcutta on Friday that the role of the headmaster and the assistant headmaster was not proper in dealing with the situation.

“On September 18, there was a decision that two new teachers would not join the school and yet, the headmaster asked them to join on September 20 and violated the decision. That is why showcause notices were served on them and they have also been suspended. An inquiry will be conducted and they will be under suspension till it is completed,” said the minister.

On Thursday, Abhijit Kundu, the headmaster and Nurul Huda, the assistant headmaster, were called by the education department in Calcutta. As senior officials spoke to them, the duo could not satisfy them with answers.

“None of them was found at the school or in the area after the incident. They did not take any initiative to reopen the institution either,” said the minister. Recruitment of the two new teachers had led to the clash at Daribhit on September 20.
