The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated a probe into the death of Mrityunjay Barman, 33, who allegedly died in police firing in North Dinajpur district early on Thursday.

A CID team visited Chandga village under Kaliaganj police station limits on Monday, where Barman's family lives.

The investigating CID team collected an empty shell of a bullet from near Barman's house and his wife's blood-stained dupatta.

However, neither the family members of Barman nor other villagers are happy with the CID probe order given by the state government.

Bishnu Barman, one of his relatives and a local BJP leader, said: "The CID collected an empty bullet shell and the dupatta of my sister-in-law which was smeared with blood. However, we do not rely on the CID investigation. We believe only an investigation by the CBI will reveal the truth."

Supporting the demand for a CBI investigation, BJP workers sat on a demonstration for five hours in Islampur subdivision on Monday.

Barman's death is related to the death of a 17-year-old girl in the district, whose body was found on April 21. The family members of the girl, a student, alleged she was raped and murdered. The police, however, said that the autopsy report stated death by poison.

Angered by the police statement, tribal and Rajbanshi outfits called for a protest march in front of Kaliaganj police station on April 25. Allegedly, when the march was stopped from reaching the police station, participants turned violent. Kaliaganj police station was set ablaze, vehicles were damaged, several policemen were thrashed and many homes in the adjoining Thanapara locality were ransacked.

Late on Wednesday night, the police raided Chandga village in search of people who took part in the violence on April 25. Allegedly, Mrityunjay Barman died of a police bullet during the raid early on Thursday.

Barman's family members lodged a written complaint with the police against assistant sub-inspector Moazzem Hossain, who they accused of firing at the youth. The ASI has also lodged a counter-complaint.

Taking both complaints into consideration, the state government ordered a CID investigation recently.
