A team of senior officers of Calcutta police scanned two blocks of Bhangar — Bhangar I and Bhangar 2 — on Thursday before drawing up a report on how the area could be brought under the jurisdiction of the city police, as desired by the chief minister.

Mamata Banerjee had asked Vineet Goyal, the commissioner of Calcutta police, on Wednesday to set up a separate police division in Bhangar, which has been the crucible of continuous violence since the rural polls were declared in June.

The team observed that Bhangar, spanning around 232 square kilometres, has a population of around 3.5 lakh and is now covered by three police stations — Bhangar, Kashipur and Calcutta Leather Complex.

The report prescribes that the three police stations be split and seven police stations be set up to ensure intensive policing following the guidelines of the Bureau of Police Research of Development (BPR&D).
