Armed goons attack two civic volunteers guarding temple, flee with its donation boxes

A gang of armed goons attacked two civic volunteers guarding a temple, and fled with its donation boxes and some other items in North Dinajpur on Wednesday night.

Md Shahjahan, one of the volunteers, suffered severe injuries from the thrashing and is hospitalised.

On Thursday morning, residents resorted to protests, demanding arrests of all those involved in the attack.

Sources said that on Wednesday night, some goons reached a Shiva temple in Sanyasitala area of Daspara, under Chopra police station of the district.

They beat up civic volunteers Shahjahan and Md Azad who were posted at the temple. The goons then fled with two donation boxes and some other belongings from the temple.

Members of the committee checked the CCTV footageof the temple. It showed six-seven persons with sticks and sharp weapons beating up the duo and fleeing with the donation boxes.

“Such an attack has never happened in the temple. We have informed the police and want appropriate steps from their end,” said Sribas Mondal, president of the temple committee.

“We had engaged the civic volunteers for the temple’s safety. It is unfortunate that they were attacked. The police should find the attackers,” said Biplab Kumar Roy, secretary of the temple committee.

On Thursday, some residents raised a blockade on a local road and burnt tyres, which held up traffic. Police intervened and managed to disperse the crowd after an hour.

Police said a probe is on. Search is on to nab the goons, they said.

Rs 20-lakh cheat cuffs on director

A man, who police said was a film director and producer, was arrested on Wednesday from Jadavpur here for allegedly cheating a person out of Rs 20 lakh by making him invest in a film promising him the lead role.

Following a complaint by Akshay Gupta, a resident of Birbhum, the police arrested Piyush Chandra Saha.

The movie for which Gupta is said to have invested money did not get made and the money was allegedly not returned.

Accident injury

A pedestrian got injured after being hit by a bus on Sealdah flyover in Calcutta on Wednesday morning.

Rahul Mitra, 20, was treated at NRS hospital in the city, police said.
