A man took a leaf out of the Aamir Khan-starrer Dhoom 3, made a failed attempt to rob a bank in Purulia's Hura on Saturday night and landed in police net on Monday night.

In Dhoom 3, Aamir plays the role of circus entertainer Sahir who robs a bank in the US to avenge his father's death.

In this case, Samir Ansari, 30, who is a resident of Dubdubi in Hura, decided to rob the SBI bank not to avenge any past injustice but to get rich fast.

On Saturday night, a robbery attempt was made at the SBI bank's Hura branch, but the bid went awry as the bank's alarm bell attached to the vault suddenly rang when the lone robber tried to disconnect it.

He fled from the branch when the alarm bell rang out, but in doing so, he left behind evidence that helped cops find and arrest Ansari 48 hours later.

Police said that during interrogation Ansari broke down and admitted that he got the idea of a bank heist from the 2013 Bollywood blockbuster.

"In the CCTV footage, we found the presence of a single person inside the bank. However, we are investigating further to find out if anyone else helped Ansari," said Abhijit Banerjee, superintendent of police, Purulia.

Police said that during the investigation they found at the spot some brand-new electrical gadgets, including a gas cutter, a portable mobile signal jammer and several screwdrivers.

They also recovered cartons from some online shopping agencies in which the gadgets were possibly packed and delivered to the customer.

"We realised that these gadgets were newly purchased from online shopping portals after we found some cardbox packets on the crime scene. Hence, we started trailing the customer of the items," said an investigating officer.

Police said they interrogated some local consignment delivery boys and through them collected the address of the customer of the items.

The police also found the name of Ansari and his address on one of the cartons. The details matched the description provided by the delivery agency.

"The address we got was in the same locality of the bank. We found Samir Ansari at home and recovered some parts of the seized gadgets and similar packets (cartons) of online shopping agencies from his house," said Banerjee.

A police officer said that sustained interrogation led Ansari to break down and confess his involvement in the crime.

"As of now, we have found the involvement of Ansari in the bank robbery bid. He told us that he got the idea of robbing the bank from Dhoom 3 and decided to commit the crime alone to get the entire booty," said an investigating officer.

Police said Ansari, a Class VIII dropout, had ordered the gadgets through online shopping agencies and learned to operate them through YouTube tutorials.

"He studied only till Class VIII and had no fixed source of income. He wanted to become rich fast and planned the bank robbery," said a police officer.

Sources said Ansari does not have any past criminal record.

The SP said they wanted to find out if anyone else helped Ansari.
