A 36-year-old woman constable of the state police is suspected to have committed suicide in Siliguri on Saturday evening.

Constable Sushmita Mothe had been posted at Pradhannagar police station in the city for the past seven years. She used to stay at a rented accommodation in Pati Colony in ward 47 with her son, a minor.

On Saturday, she returned home from the school where she was put on duty during Madhyamik exams, sources said. She went inside and locked her room, not even responding to her son.

Her son raised an alert. With the help of some others, he broke the door and found Sushmita hanging from a noose. She was already dead. The police recovered the body and started a probe.

Illegal sand mining

A team of Bidhannagar investigation centre, under Phansidewa police station of Darjeeling district police, caught six dump trucks loaded with sand on Saturday night at a Muraliganj checkpoint. As the six drivers failed to provide any document to validate the transport of sand, they were arrested and the vehicles impounded.

Police sources said sand was illegally extracted from the bed of the Chenga river that flows through Phansidewa. The six drivers are from North Dinajpur.
