The Government Railway Police (GRP) posted at New Jalpaiguri railway station arrested 13 Rohingya refugees, including children and women, from the railway station on Friday evening while the group was waiting to board an Assam-bound train.

Sources said as the group reached the railway station, some police personnel on duty felt suspicious about their activities. As they spoke with the group members, it was found that all of them — including six children and two women — were the Rohingya.

“They were arrested under the Foreigners’ Act for travelling without proper documents. During preliminary investigation, it has been found that they had plans to reach Tripura via Assam and then head for their camp in Bangladesh,” said a police source.

The police have also come to know that some of them were working in Delhi and Jammu for the past few months. A probe is on.
