Two Trinamul Congress MLAs in Jalpaiguri district have threatened to quit the party as they were not allegedly included in the organisation’s district committee.

Rajganj MLA Khageswar Roy and Maynaguri legislator Anantadeb Adhikari have said they are being ignored by K.K. Kalyani, the Jalpaiguri district Trinamul chief.

According to them, Kalyani was made the new district president last year and the district committee, block committees and the anchal (panchayat-level) committees were dissolved. The committees have not been constituted since then. However, three days ago, members of a team led by Trinamul’s poll strategist Prashant Kishore called up leaders and workers, mentioning that they needed to visit the zilla parishad and collect entry passes for the party meeting in Calcutta on Monday.

Both Roy and Adhikari, along with other MLAs of the party in the district, were surprised to know that the district committee, 15 block committees and 80 ‘anchal’ committees had been formed and the presidents and members called for the Calcutta meeting.

Roy, who has been invited to the meeting as an MLA and not as a member of any committee, said: “Not a single meeting was held at district, block or anchal levels to form the new committees. The names of MLAs, civic chiefs and many prominent leaders are not on the list of members of the new district committee, block and anchal committees. That has left me upset and I am planning of resigning from the party.”

Adhikari, the Maynaguri MLA, sounded equally disappointed. “It seems the party no longer needs me. That is why I feel I should walk out of the party. However, I will make a decision only after Monday’s meeting in Calcutta,” said Adhikari.

Other MLAs like Bulu Chik Baraik of Malbazar, Mitali Roy of Dhupguri and Sukra Munda of Nagrakata also appeared disgruntled.

Kalyani said: “No committee has been announced so far. It was just a list that was prepared to issue entry passes to party leaders and workers for the meeting.”
