Majhi died on the spot.

A local BJP worker, Krishna Hansda, was arrested in connection with the murder. “The probe is on to find out others behind the crime,” said Bhaskar Mukherjee, the East Burdwan district police chief.

Sources said the family of Majhi had lodged a police complaint against seven persons, including four BJP workers.

Local Trinamul leaders alleged that Majhi had been threatened by BJP leaders when he had taken out victory procession in the area following Trinamul’s win in three Assembly bypolls.

“Majhi was not holding any post in Trinamul but he was our main force in Alampur. The BJP killed him simply to weaken our organisation in Alampur,” said Nepal Ghorui, Trinamul’s Raina MLA.

After murdering him, the miscreants threw his motorbike into a pond.

The BJP has denied the charges and claimed the murder was the fallout of the feud within Trinamul. “The Trinamul worker was killed by the members of his rival lobby,” Bijan Ghosh, a district secretary of the BJP, said.
