A block president of the Trinamul Congress has promised gifts for local leaders who ensure huge victory margins for the party’s Jalpaiguri Lok Sabha candidate, Bijoy Chandra Burman.
A Trinamul workers’ meeting was convened in the Sadar block 2 committee office of the party at Assam More here on Sunday evening.
Nitai Kar, the Trinamul president of the Sadar block 2 committee, said in his speech that he would award a motorcycle and smartphones to party workers of those panchayats and booths which ensured highest leads for the candidate.
Under block 2 committee, there are six panchayats.
“Among the six committees, the one that will secure the highest lead will get a motorcycle. We will also provide six smartphones, one to each booth committee, that will have maximum leads for our candidate,” Kar said.
Debasish Chakraborty, the Jalpaiguri district president of the BJP, said: “Because of such announcements, Trinamul workers will become desperate and resort to violence to garner more votes.”
Kar, however, said: “I have not said anything in public. Whatever I have said was at a party meeting.”
The district administration, however, took note of Kar’s remarks. “The Model Code of Conduct cell has been asked to look into the issue and report to me as to whether there has been any violation,” said Silpa Gourisaria, DM, Jalpaiguri.
