Terror cuffs on Calcutta student

An MA final-year student of a city college has been arrested for alleged links with terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba.

The 21-year-old had been allegedly spreading purported anti-national texts and videos and encouraging the ideals of the Lashkar-e-Toiba through WhatsApp groups created with Pakistani SIM cards, police said.

The woman has been booked for sedition and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

“There are at least 50 accounts that she had created as the admin,” a police officer said.

The resident of Baduria, North 24-Parganas, had been under the special task force’s scanner after an alert was issued by the Union home ministry last year.

The daughter of a mason, she was doing her post-graduation in Arabic literature.

The woman was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Basirhat on Thursday and remanded in police custody for 14 days.

She was later brought to Calcutta on transit remand for interrogation.

The police are examining a diary recovered from her home and her cellphone.

They have found some telephone numbers of purported Pakistani links, the police said.
