The order giving additional charge of the special task force of Calcutta police and the directorate of economic offences to former Calcutta police commissioner Rajeev Kumar has been revoked.

Kumar, now additional director-general of police, CID, will continue to hold the charge of the state CID, a government notification issued on Wednesday said.

Sources in the state home department said the change, less than a week after Kumar was given the additional responsibilities, could be related to a complaint lodged with the state election commission by the BJP.

The complaint listed questions related to Kumar having been given the additional charge of the two “sensitive wings”.

“It appears the change was made apprehending objections from the Election Commission once the general elections are announced in a few days,” said a senior official in the state home department.

The special task force deals with cases related to terror activities, while the directorate of economic offences probes financial scams.

Last Friday, the state government had said the directorate of economic offences, a wing of the Bengal police, and the special task force of the city police would function under Kumar.
