Cops want to interrogate the three face to face to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the woman’s murder, he said.

The police brought Puri to Calcutta on Saturday on a five-day transit remand from a Patiala court. He was produced in Alipore court on Sunday.

“Gold jewellery and Rs 72,000 belonging to the murdered woman have been recovered from Puri,” Ghosal said.

The police have said Kanika, the woman’s granddaughter, was present at the scene of crime. Her daughter-in-law was not there. “We have evidence to suggest they had plotted the murder a month ago,” an officer said.

Puri apparently kept stabbing the woman till she became motionless as Kanika smothered her with a pillow, the police have said. But when the body moved, he beheaded the woman and ripped open her intestines, he is said to have told the police.

Saurav Puri, 22, arrested in Punjab in connection with the murder of Garcha resident Urmila Devi, was on Sunday remanded in police custody till December 24.

Sourin Ghosal, the public prosecutor, said the murder weapon and some more jewellery were yet to be recovered.

Urmila Devi, 65, was found in the house of her youngest son on Thursday with around two dozen stab wounds on her abdomen and chest and her head severed. She had been staying alone in the house for a few days.

Her daughter-in-law Dimple Jund, 32, and granddaughter Kanika Jund, 18, were arrested in the city on Friday. Puri, Dimple’s friend, was picked up the same day in Punjab.

All three have been booked for murder.

Dimple and Kanika were produced in Alipore court on Saturday and remanded in police custody for 10 days.

Public prosecutor Ghosal said he sought Puri’s police custody to take the investigation forward. “The accused has other jewellery of the murdered woman in his possession.... Besides, the murder weapon is still to be seized. Police need to interrogate him.”
