Mamata Banerjee is planning to launch an intensive campaign in Bengal for the Lok Sabha polls with at least 84 rallies over a 40-day period from April 2.

The blitzkrieg of rallies, sources in the Trinamul Congress said, would set a new record in terms of public meetings by the chief minister ahead of any general election.

The sources in Trinamul said Mamata would address at least two rallies for each of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state and the final count might cross 100.

“There will be at least two meetings for each of the 42 seats, more than two for some, depending on the need. By the end of the campaign for the final phase, there could be over 100 rallies by the chief minister,” said a Trinamul leader, who added that the 80-odd rallies were over and above the numerous meetings and other campaign initiatives being carried out by the party in all constituencies.

The manner in which Mamata’s plans are being drawn up, the sources said, reminded some leaders of her strategy ahead of the 2011 Assembly polls which catapulted her to the seat of power in Bengal.

While the objective was to wipe out the Left eight summers ago, the mission is to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah this time. The BJP’s top two have also drawn up plans to criss-cross the state during the seven-phase Lok Sabha polls.

“She will obliterate the impact, if any, of the BJP’s campaign, spearheaded by Modi and Shah,” said the Trinamul leader.

Mamata has been choosing Tuesdays for all important campaign initiatives this year — she launched the revamped symbol of Trinamul on March 5, announced party candidates on March 12. “And April 2 is no exception,” said a senior Trinamul leader.

“The manifesto, too, is likely to be released on a Tuesday. It has been meticulously drafted with emphasis on the party’s prospective national role,” he added.

The sources said after Mamata had announced the candidates on March 12, the expectation was that she would immediately go into rally mode. But instead she has been waiting patiently.

“Didi has been cautiously monitoring developments to fine tune her campaign and awaiting perfect time to launch her precision strikes,” the senior leader said.

“From April 2, she will come out all guns blazing. The BJP will have to think of new ways everyday to sustain its Bengal campaign,” he added.

The sources said most of Mamata’s major programmes would be timed to take place immediately before or after the top draw events of the saffron camp.

April 2 is the day before Prime Minister Modi’s twin rallies, expected to take place in Siliguri and at the Brigade Parade Grounds in Calcutta.

Shah is likely to attend a rally in Alipurduar on April 2. Prior to that, Shah is likely to hold rallies in Cooch Behar and Raiganj on March 30.
