Mamata Banerjee will address three rallies in Bongaon, Ranaghat and Kalyani as part of her campaign against the new citizenship matrix.

The choice of locations indicates that the chief minister will concentrate on areas where the Matuas play an important role in determining the electoral outcome.

“Our party workers will go on a door-to-door campaign against the CAA and the NRC. Several programmes have been lined up. The chief minister will address three rallies in Bongaon, Ranaghat and Kalyani,” Trinamul secretary general Partha Chatterjee said at Trinamul Bhavan here on Friday.

The briefing followed a meeting that Mamata chaired at the party headquarters after returning from north Bengal. Senior ministers and leaders and presidents and observers of the district units of Trinamul attended the meeting.

Sources said the chief minister took stock of the protest programmes already conducted by the party, besides discussing with the leaders the future course of action.

“On February 1 and 2, the party will hold anti-CAA and anti-NRC protests in all blocks. On February 5, we will form human chains at different places. The next day, there will be silent marches. We will hold street-corner meetings on February 7,” said Chatterjee.

According to him, it has been decided that elected representatives will spend nights at the homes of SC and ST people living in their areas.

The slew of programmes, party sources said, indicated that Mamata wants to maintain the momentum of the movement against the NRC and the CAA.

“As the civic polls in Calcutta, Howrah and nearly 90 other municipalities are nearing, this will help us in electioneering,” said a source.

The source said the meeting also saw some discussions on how to prepare for the civic polls.

The key issue for Trinamul in the civic poll is zeroing in on candidates. The sources said the party top brass had indicated that lobbying for nominations in the civic polls would not be tolerated.
