A five-year-old child, who came to the city with his family from Bihar on Monday morning to attend a relative’s wedding in Ekbalpore, died after a lamp post crashed on him on Monday afternoon.

The child — Amit Das, 5, from Jamui district of Bihar — was playing in front of a house at 6 Hossain Shah Road in Ekbalpore around noon when he was injured.

Amit was taken to a private hospital in Alipore in an unconscious state. He succumbed to head, chest and abdomen injuries in the evening.

The lamp post that had been defunct for a long time snapped from the middle and crashed on the child, residents of the neighbourhood said. People in the locality said that had the civic authorities been a little more alert, the accident could have been averted.

Senior officers in the Port division said no specific case was lodged as there was no complaint from the family till Monday evening.

An 11-year-old had died and an eight-year-old suffered injuries after the iron gate of a park maintained by the corporation in Tangra came off its hinges and crashed on them on Saturday.
