The International Baccalaureate (IB) Class XII exams, scheduled for May, have been cancelled as countries across the world fight the coronavirus pandemic.

At least three city schools — Calcutta International School, The Heritage School and Modern High School for Girls — offer the IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme), which is equivalent to the Class XII exams. The diploma programme is a two-year course for classes XI and XII.

The exams were scheduled between April 30 and May 22.

“The May 2020 examinations, as scheduled between 30 April and 22 May, for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme students will no longer be held,” said a mail from IB to heads of schools.

“Depending on what they registered for, the students will be awarded a Diploma or Course Certificate. This is based on student’s submitted coursework and the established assessment expertise, rigour and quality control already built into the programmes.”

The schools will send the course work to IB online.

“The research assignments that children do at home will be sent to IB for moderation. Under the given circumstances, it might not be possible for many regions to conduct the exams,” said Munmun Nath, principal, senior section, Calcutta International School.

“We have alerted our students on Monday about the exams being cancelled,” said Seema Sapru, the principal of The Heritage School.

“Students and parents should understand that exams are not the only purpose of learning,” Nath said.
