Gym equipment have been installed at the century-old Narendra Narayan Park in Cooch Behar town.

Run by the state forest department, it is the largest park in the town and is known for its floral landscape, a vertical garden, a toy train, boating facilities in a lake, clean walking tracks and a zone for children.

Recently, the department installed instruments that are usually available in gymnasiums, including walkers, and is working on a plan to start an open-air gym on the park premises. None will be charged for using the equipment.

“Some of the instruments have been installed in the open and some more will be introduced soon. The idea is to provide options for workout to people of different age groups. It will increase the footfall at the park as people can come here in their leisure time not only for entertainment but also for workout sessions,” said Mrinal Kanti Sarkar, a range officer of the department posted at the park.

He said that every morning, several people come to the park for a walk. There are people who also take part in yoga sessions at the park.
