Force for northern fringes

THE POLICE COMMISSIONERATE OF BARRACKPORE COMES INTO FORCE ON JANUARY 20. METRO TAKES A LOOK AT HOW IT WOULD TACKLE CRIME AND TRAFFIC Published 18.01.12, 12:00 AM

Headed by: A commissioner of police, who will be of inspector-general rank. Sanjay Mukherjee, the IG of south Bengal, is a frontrunner.

Expanse: 297sq km, including the entire area along BT Road between Barrackpore and Baranagar.

Divisions: Barrackpore and Belghoria.

Police stations: Twelve. Dum Dum, Baranagar, Nimta, Belghoria, Ghola, Khardah, Titagarh, Barrackpore, Noapara, Jagaddal, Naihati and Bijpur.

Population: 44 lakh.

Structure: The commissioner will be assisted by a joint commissioner. There will be two deputy commissioners for the two divisions. Additional deputy commissioners of the rank of deputy superintendent of police will head other departments, including the detective department and the traffic wing. The commissionerate will start functioning with three IPS officers — the commissioner and two deputy commissioners.

Strength: The commissionerate will have 1,858 cops, which is more than five times the present strength of all the stations combined.

Will that be enough? “The job would have been easier had the government sanctioned 500 more cops,” said an officer.

Uniform: Khaki.

Biggest challenge: Keeping BT Road free of traffic snarls, especially near the Dunlop crossing; preventing crime in the jute mill belt along the Hooghly, in places like Agarpara, Alambazar, Kamarhati and Titagarh.

Is there a new helpline number? No. You have to dial 100.

Where do I go if a cop demands a bribe? You could directly approach a deputy commissioner of police. Once the special branch is set up, it will deal with such complaints.

Biggest grouse: Keeping Barasat, the North 24-Parganas district headquarters and the entry point to Calcutta from north Bengal and Bangladesh, out of the police district. Poor surveillance in this area may invite trouble for cops who’ll be functioning under the new set-up.

What would you like the new police commissionerate to tackle first?
