Amit Shah is tipped to inaugurate on Tuesday a puja in Salt Lake’s BJ block that few outside the township know of, with the BJP picking it after spending months looking for a high-profile puja befitting the stature of its national president.

However, even at this puja, Shah would be present as Union home minister — not the BJP chief — and no other leader from his party would be allowed to accompany him, said a member of the organising committee.

The BJ block puja committee is headed by local BJP leader Umashankar Ghosh Dastidar but comprises several Trinamul leaders.

BJP state general-secretary Sayantan Basu said Shah’s office picked the BJ block puja from a list of five sent to him. He said it was chosen because it would be on Shah’s way to the airport. “We were choosy about the puja which Amit Shah would inaugurate…. Any puja he inaugurates will turn big and earn extra mileage,” said Basu.

Several BJP insiders admitted in private that they found it “very difficult” to get such a puja to invite Shah because of Trinamul’s hegemony on the puja scene in Calcutta and its immediate neighbourhood.

In terms of the scale, he said the party was looking for a puja to match the profile of the Ganesh Puja of Lalbaghcha Raja Ganesh Mandal — regarded as the biggest in Maharashtra — that Shah had inaugurated earlier this month.

A Trinamul-leaning member of the organising committee said till the meeting, they were unaware of Shah’s inauguration plans. “That’s when we made Ghosh Dastidar commit that Shah would be present as Union home minister, not a political leader, and that no other leader from his party would accompany him,” said the member.
