Investigators probing the murder of a retired railway employee in Tikiapara, Howrah, have started collecting CCTV footage from the nationalised bank he visited on Friday to withdraw Rs 1 lakh for the treatment of his bedridden wife.

Mohammed Jalil, 65, was found lying dead in the bathroom of his home early on Saturday.

Two youths had knocked on the apartment door and barged in the night before, his wife Zarina told police.

“The killers had possibly followed Jalil from the bank to be sure he had withdrawn the amount and then planned their operation,” said an officer of the Howrah police commissionerate. “They waited for the night and attacked, hoping to lay their hands on the entire amount that Jalil had withdrawn from the bank.”

The youths took with them jewellery, Rs 50,000 and a television set.

The heap of clothes, bags and other items lying in front of an almirah show the gang’s desperation to find the rest of the amount. The police said they couldn’t trace the remaining Rs 50,000 that Jalil had kept separately.

“We are scanning Jalil’s call records and gathering information about those who possibly knew about his bank visits every three months,” an officer said.

The police will also speak to the woman physiotherapist who, on Zarina’s directions, checked the rooms of the flat when she came the morning after the incident. She was the one who found the body in the bathroom.
