The high court on Monday upheld a state clinical establishment regulatory commission order and directed a city hospital to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a 14-year-old girl who had died at the hospital.

Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya asked Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences at Mukundapur, off the Bypass, to pay the money within 15 days of receiving a copy of the order.

Anindita Mondal, a resident of Sonarpur, died in January in 2018 apparently because of a rupture in the bile duct during a gall bladder surgery.

The family had moved the commission alleging medical negligence.

The commission ruled in the family’s favour and the hospital moved the high court, challenging the order.

“We are yet to receive a copy of the order. If the order directs us to pay a compensation, we’ll do the same,” a hospital official said.
