Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the Bengal government to submit “authentic” documents by the first week of January to substantiate its claim that Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders Bimal Gurung and Roshan Giri had been living in Nepal.
The order followed questions from advocate-general Kishore Dutta on whether the court could hear the anticipatory bail petitions of the leaders, absconding since being named in cases related to the 2017 statehood agitation.
Dutta claimed the government had “authentic” reports that Gurung and Giri were in Nepal.
The Morcha leaders’ counsel, Y.J. Dastoor, claimed his clients were in another state and had not left India.
The division bench headed by Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked the duo’s lawyer to file a report in a sealed cover mentioning the leaders’ present addresses.
