2 dead, 4 injured in road accidents

A pedestrian and an elderly pillion-rider died and four others, including a seven-year-old child, were injured in four road accidents in the city between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Sailendra Nath Dey, 83, was riding pillion on a two-wheeler which was hit by a goods vehicle on Raja Manindra Road, in Paikpara, around 11pm on Saturday. Dey, a resident of Shibpur, was taken to RG Kar hospital, where he was declared dead. “The driver of the goods vehicle has been arrested,” a police officer said.

Around the same time, another goods vehicle hit a pedestrian at the junction of Nabab Lane and Strand Road in Posta. Basudev Paul, 57, was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The goods vehicle driver has been arrested.

Disha Biswas, 7, a resident of Sonarpur, fell while getting off a bus on the Patuli connector around 10.40am on Sunday. Biswas has been admitted to hospital. The bus driver has been arrested.

A motorcyclist and two pillion-riders were injured when the two-wheeler skidded on the Rashbehari connector in Kasba late on Saturday. The injured were Bubai Halder, 32, Biltu Sen, 30, and Manisha Jha, 24.
