The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) on Tuesday launched its campaign for the Lok Sabha elections and Assembly bypoll to Aizawl West-I seat which will be held simultaneously on April 11.

The party has fielded former Doordarshan director general C. Lalrosanga for the lone Lok Sabha seat and former student leader Zothantluanga for the Assembly seat.

Addressing a campaign at Vanapa hall here, chief minister and MNF chief Zoramthanga said the polls will be a straight fight between his party and the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)-Congress alliance, who fielded a football icon and journalist Lalnghinglova Hmar.

Zoramthanga said although there are some Independent candidates, the main opponent of the MNF is the ZPM-Congress combine.

“People have already made up their mind who to vote for,” he said.

Zoramthanga said the MNF along with the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC), which are members of the ZPM, had signed an agreement expressing their allegiance to the NDA before Lok Sabha polls in 2014.

He alleged that the ZNP has forged an alliance with the BJP for Aizawl North-III seat in the 2013 Assembly polls.

Hitting out at the ZPM, Zoramthanga also said it is joining hands with the Congress, who sold alcohol against the interest of churches and the people.

Commenting on BJP president J.V. Hluna’s remarks that his party would extend support to the MNF in the by-election, the MNF president said they strongly welcome any party which wanted to support the regional party.
