Rs 6 crore for victims

Total 33 relatives of murder victims, including six females, were compensated

Altogether 235 people, including 183 females, have been compensated for various crimes under the Mizoram Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme, 2011 which was launched in 2012.

According to records of the Mizoram State Legal Service Authority (MSLSA), compensation amounting to over Rs 5.98 crore was given to crime victims or their kin or dependents under the scheme between 2012 and September 2019.

The record said at least 149 children, including 143 girls, were given compensation for being victims of crimes committed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

A total of 33 relatives of murder victims, including six females, were compensated. .

Altogether 28 rape victims were given compensation amounting to Rs 36.40 lakh during the same period.

The number of crime victims was the highest in 2018 as the government disbursed compensation of Rs 3.32 crore to 103 crime victims.

In 2017, compensation amounting to Rs 1.53 crore was given to 54 crime victims. In 2016, Rs 33.84 lakh was given to 43 victims. Only one victim was compensated in 2012, two in 2013, nine in 2014 and 12 in 2015.

The crime compensation scheme has been amended at least four times.

Under it, minimum compensation ranging between Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh is given to victims for several crimes, including those of acid attack, rape and sexual abuse.
