As the New Year tiptoes into the city, it is likely to hear slogans on the streets and the sound of music at entertainment venues.

The atmosphere of uncertainty in the face of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act notwithstanding, hotels and lounge bars have lined up entertainment programmes for people to ring in 2020. Live bands and DJs are the main attraction at most hotels and lounge bars while dances and other forms of entertainment are being organised by others.

Star category hotel Vivanta Guwahati has enlisted the services of city band Colossal Corps and DJ Puneet at Joysagar banquet hall and acoustic band Reins & Ferns with DJ Anurag at Octave bar so that revellers can ring in the New Year with music. The hotel is also offering stay and non-resident packages for couples and stags.

Bang opposite Vivanta is Hotel Palacio, which has lined up entertainment, food and drinks for fun-loving customers and family-oriented ones, including a special kids zone at Harmony banquet hall. Varun Vohra and DJ Chris will perform at Nyx Lounge and Bar.

At star-rated Novotel, bands, DJs, dancers, fireworks and a gala dinner awaits revellers.

Hip hop sensation Spindoctor from Mumbai will regale revellers at Retro Town lounge bar. For those with an insatiable thirst, Rang de Basanti Urban Dhaba is offering unlimited sangria (wine) along with the newly launched food and drinks menu to its patrons.

Hotels like Radisson Blu and restaurants like Rang De Basanti are opting for a more sedate but sumptuous celebration by limiting the New Year’s eve festivities to food and drinks.

The district administration has, meanwhile, drawn up plans to enforce guidelines regarding serving of liquor in hotels, bars and wine shops.

Excise superintendent Debajit Nath told The Telegraph, “We are forming five flying squads to ensure that the bars and wine shops stick to the deadline for serving and selling alcohol. Hotel bars with proper licence can serve food but will have to stop serving liquor by midnight.”

Transport department officials and traffic police will set up check points to curb drink driving and those imbibing more than the permissible limit will be made to cough up fines.

“Enjoyment within limits should be the motto of everyone out to have a good time on the New Year’s eve,” one of them said.

Other popular hangouts in the city offering entertainment on the New Year’s eve include Nuts & Brew, Taika Lounge & Bar, Brooklyn Blues, Underdoggs, Bulls & Beers and Xtreme Sports Bar & Grill.
