Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland have witnessed a lower enrolment rate under the biometric scheme, Aadhaar, while the nationwide figure of people having the 12-digit unique identification number has crossed 125 crore.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Friday announced a new milestone achieved by the Aadhaar project, that of crossing the 125-crore mark.

This implies that over 1.25 billion residents of India now have the 12-digit unique identity, a communiqué said.

The communiqué added that there has been a rapid increase in the use of Aadhaar as a primary identity document.

“This is evident from the fact that Aadhaar-based authentication services have been used close to 37,000 crore times since inception. At present, UIDAI receives about 3 crore authentication requests every day,” it added.

Moreover, it noted that residents are more inclined to keeping their details in Aadhaar updated.

UIDAI recorded close to 331 crore successful Aadhaar updates (biometric and demographic) till date. At present, it receives about 3 to4 lakh Aadhaar update requests every day.

However, the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland have miles to go to catch up with other states in enrolling citizens under the scheme.

In Assam, while the projected population in 2019 is 3,50,80,827, only 61,62,498 Aadhaar numbers have been assigned, resulting in the saturation percentage to be recorded at 17.6 per cent.

Behind Assam is Meghalaya where, against a projected population of 33,20,226, only 9,73,350 Aadhar numbers have been assigned so far (29.3 per cent).

In Nagaland, 12,64,020 Aadhaar numbers have been assigned against a projected population of 22,18,634 resulting in a saturation percentage of 57 per cent.

Delhi tops the list among states/Union territories with the highest saturation percentage of 117.2 per cent where 2,16,83,577 Aadhaar numbers have been assigned.

These figures for Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Delhi are upto November 30 this year, which are available with the UIDAI.
