The All Assam Primary and Upper Primary Mid-day Meal Cook and Helper Association on Sunday announced a five-day statewide agitation over its unfulfilled demands.

Association adviser Trishna Nath said the agitation will continue against the “indifferent attitude” of the state government as well as non-government organisations employed in distributing midday meals at primary schools.

The state government had recently handed over the midday meal preparation to NGOs, reducing the job of workers to only distribution. Certain NGOs had geared up to distribute cooked meals in some schools at Lakhimpur, Udalguri and Hojai but protesters disrupted the process.

The association will block national highways across the state on November 9 and 10 from 8am to 1pm. It will also block railway tracks on November 11. A sit-in will be organised on November 12 in front of education minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya’s residence. It will also go on hunger strike on November 13 at Janata Bhawan.

The association has been demanding increase in remuneration, regularisation of jobs and immediate withdrawal of the work order to 15 NGOs to distribute midday meals at primary schools.
