Singers and actors in the city are getting ready for another protest on Sunday where music will play a major role in conveying their protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Popular singer Zubeen Garg, while addressing protesters at AASU’s 10-hour mass hunger strike on Friday, asked everyone to participate in Sunday’s “musical protest” that will start at 11am at the Assam Engineering Institute field in Chandmari.

The demonstration on Friday was attended by thousands and a large number of celebrities from the film and music industry were also present.

Zubeen Garg, Barasha Rani Bishaya, Jatin Bora, Zerifa Wahid, Kopil Bora, Nishita Goswami, Manas Robin, Utpal Das and Rabi Sarma were prominent in lending their voice and their star shine to the protest organised by AASU.

Many joined AASU’s 10-hour hunger strike, demanding repealing of the act.

Other celebrities have not lagged behind in protesting against the act and organised protests along with other artistes from the film, art and music fraternities. On Thursday, a large group made its way to Dighalipukhuri from Chandmari, carrying banners and shouting slogans.

Zubeen has been playing a major role in the protests, lending his voice to the growing clamour against the act along with student leaders of AASU. In his inimitable style, the singer has shown his thumb to the ruling dispensation, singing “Politics Nokoriba Bondhu (shun politics friend)”.

Actor and director Bora also announced his exit from the BJP and his plum post in the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation in protest.

Robin was joined by several other singers in rendering Akou Joi Aai Axom — a song that is just right for the atmosphere prevailing in the state.

This set the tone for the speeches by Zubeen and actors Das and Sarma who has resigned from the BJP in protest against the ruling party’s indifference to the voice of the people against the act.

Actress Bishaya has been vocal against the act, slamming the state’s political leaders for being mute spectators and failing to protect Assamese culture, language and identity.

She has been regularly joining the protesters since the day the CAA was tabled in the Lok Sabha.
