Guwahati, July 8: Assamese mobile theatre industry is going to add another feather on its cap - use of 3D technology.

Kohinoor Theatre, a leading mobile theatre group, has decided to use 3D to bring in new technology to the most vibrant form of the entertainment industry in the state.

The theatre group, which hails from Pathsala in lower Assam's Barpeta district, earlier attracted the world's attention by staging Titanic on stage. It was a huge commercial success.

The audience will be able to enjoy the technology in the play Breaking News, by young playwright Rajdweep. Tapan Lahkar, the son of theatre personality Ratan Lahkar, who set up the theatre group, said the entire name-casting will be done with the help of 3D effects. He looks after Kohinoor Theatre now.

"The duration of the 3D part will be five minutes and five seconds. We have spent more than Rs 40 lakh to introduce the technology. Although 3D is common nowadays in Hollywood movies most people living in rural areas in Assam have no clue about it," Lahkar said.

"Since our theatre group travels to every nook and corner of the state, the people this time will at least know what 3D technology is. This is the first time that an Assamese entertainment media is going to introduce 3D effects," Lahkar said.

Lahkar's brother Pranab, who has experience of working in Bollywood in 3D technology for more than a decade, is personally looking after the matter. "The Assamese audience has always been looking for innovative story or technology either in cinema or plays. But introducing 3D technology will be a big step for mobile theatre. It will also be a nice experience for the people," he said.

During his three-year stint in the industry, Rajdweep has written several commercially successful plays. This year, three leading mobile theatre groups will stage four of his plays. Rajdweep said Breaking News is about the modern day media industry. He said it would be the first such play on the mobile theatre platform in the state.

Popular actress Barsha Rani Bishaya will be seen on the Kohinoor stage this year. Mobile theatre groups are now busy with rehearsals. Lahkar said Kohinoor would start its shows from the second half of next month.
