Two men in their twenties were arrested on Monday for assaulting two mobile tigers, or cops on bikes, near Baug-e-Jamsheed School on Straight Mile Road under Sakchi police station on Monday morning.

The arrested were identified as Mahabir Deep (25), a resident of Sakchi Gurudwara Bustee, and Avinash Kumar Gupta (24), a resident of Ulidih in Mango.

According to sources, Mahabir was allegedly teasing a girl near JN Tata’s statue inside Jubilee Park when a policeman deputed nearby objected to his behaviour. Mahavir assaulted the cop and fled towards Sakchi.

The policeman informed a mobile tiger unit, which was patrolling Straight Mile Road, about the incident.

On being intercepted by mobile tigers Sayed Salman Akhtar and Irfan Hussain, Mahabir attacked Salman, prompting the cop duo to rain blows on him.

On seeing a youth being beaten up by two men in uniform, the passers-by came in support of Mahabir and started thrashing the policemen.

Sources said Avinash, one of the passers-by, incited the crowd to teach the cops a lesson.

City SP Subhash Chandra Jat, who was passing through the stretch at that time, got down from his vehicle, dispersed the agitated crowd and ordered the arrest of Mahabir and Avinash.

Police have registered a case of assault against Mahabir and Avinash on an FIR lodged by Salman.

“We have forwarded the two men to Ghaghidih Central Jail after producing them before a judicial magistrate,” Sakchi OC L.P. Mandal said.

While assaulting the mobile tigers, Mahabir had torn Salman’s shirt and scratched his chest. “The two of us stopped the accused only after getting the informed by another policeman. But as soon as we caught him, he started assaulting me,” Salman said.
