Adityapur toll bridge over the Kharkai river will soon get an iron fence to stop the increasing incidents of suicide.

East Singhbhum district administration has taken an initiative to install an iron fence on either side of the bridge connecting Adityapur industrial area in Seraikela-Kharsawan to Kadma in the steel city.

Deputy commissioner (DC) Ravi Shankar Shukla has already discussed the matter with the officials Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC).

“We are seriously contemplating installing the iron fencing on either side of the Adityapur bridge, which is increasingly turning into a suicide point,” Shukla said.

The DC said he would soon direct Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) to install iron net or fence similar to Jai Prakash Narayan Setu over Subernarekha in Mango.

In January, two youths committed suicide by jumping into the water from the Adityapur toll bridge. One of the deceased was a resident of Burmamines, about 7km away from the toll bridge, while he another other was a resident of Bagbera, about 5km away.

“Covering such long distances to reach Adityapur toll bridge only to commit suicide indicates that it has started turning into a suicide point. This is the reason that the administration has become serious about taking a decision to stop recurrence of such incidents,” an officer at Kadma police station said.

The officer said people jumping into the river from Jai Prakash Narayan Setu in Mango and Kharkai bridge in Bistupur had also become a regular affair.
