Indian cinema’s centenary celebrations will have a six-day reel from Ranchi.

A film festival organised jointly by state and Centre’s directorate of film festivals (ministry of information and broadcasting) will be held from September 11 to September 16 in the capital.

Touted as a big-ticket affair, it will screen milestone movies apart from Jharkhand films and include starry visits of Bollywood celebrities.

Chief minister Arjun Munda, also the minister in-charge of information and public relations department of the state, has started directing officials to prepare for the event. A panel to oversee the festival has been set up by the department to cherry-pick films that will be screened.

Apart from Bollywood movies and films in different Indian languages, the department wants to include films in languages and dialects of Jharkhand. The first feature film in a dialect of Jharkhand was Sona Kar Nagpur in Nagpuri, produced by Dhananjay Nath Tiwari in 1994.

Other items on the things-to-do list are finalising the venue and glam quotient. “We are preparing a wish list of Bollywood celebrities. The Centre will get their appointments; we will offer them hospitality,” said an official.

The state can suggest celebrity names, especially those with Jharkhand roots. Obvious layman choices are director Imtiaz Ali and actor Priyanka Chopra, one bred and the other born in Jamshedpur. Filmmakers from different states are also being invited. The Centre will fund the airfare.

The first Indian motion picture was Raja Harishchandra, released by Dadasaheb Phalke in Mumbai’s Coronation Cinema on May 3, 1913. The government of India, with the film industry, is lining up a host of activities between May 3, 2012 and May 3, 2013.
